The question comes up in nearly every design review we run: does this gear really need to be ground? The honest answer is — often not, and knowing when to stop at hobbing can cut part cost by 30 to 50 percent.
Hobbing alone comfortably reaches AGMA Class 8–9 on pre-hardened steels. For agricultural drives, conveyors and most industrial gearboxes running under 15 m/s pitch-line velocity, that is all the accuracy the application can even use. The extra money spent on grinding buys nothing but a nicer inspection chart.
Grinding earns its cost in three situations: teeth that must be finished after case hardening, noise-critical meshes in vehicle and robotics drives, and any application where flank-form tolerance directly limits load capacity. Because grinding removes post-heat-treat distortion, it is the only way to guarantee Class 10–12 geometry on a carburized gear.
Our rule of thumb: specify the quality class your application needs, not the best one your supplier can offer — then let the process follow. If you are unsure, send us the duty cycle and we will run the numbers with you before you commit the print.
